African hedgehogs

Date: 18th Oct 2018 @ 3:34pm

Today we had a visit from some very special guests. Vicky from Old Hall nursery came to see us with her special pets... African hedgehogs! They were a little bit different from the hedgehogs that we have in this country. The hedgehogs around our countryside are brown but Vicky's hedgehogs were more blonde!

Vicky told us that her hedgehogs are awake at night and can run up to three or four miles on their special exercise wheel. We had a go at stroking Flower and her baby, Conker. They felt spiky but were very cute. Vicky also told us that hedgehogs can have between 5000 and 7000 spines. We watched as Flower curled up into a ball when Vicky stroked her tummy.

Conker, the baby hedgehog was born without any spines but when they are two hours old their spines come through but they are very soft. Shortly after these drop out and the stronger ones come out!
