Our new visitors

Date: 16th Jul 2018 @ 11:57am

We were surprised to see some unexpected visitors to our outdoor area today. On the bank outside our classroom we spotted some orange and black stripy caterpillars. When we googled them we discovered that they were cinnabar caterpillars that turn into cinnabar moths. Some of them were very small and others were very big. We watched the eating machines munch their way through the ragwort plants until all the yellow flowers and green leaves disappeared.

They spin a cocoon in the soil and will not come out until the next summer as moths! Wow, fancy going to sleep for a whole year!
